Visual story telling
I like to look at photography as a way to tell a story and hopefully that is portrayed in the images i create.
In these guides you will find a few tips on how to plan for a recipe shoot for a blog post, and also how to think about styling for a client.
You will find I have also included some tips on finding your own style, styling a scene, building layers and using the human element to tell a story.
Using hands or a human element to photos
I like to use the human element in a lot of my photos, there are a few reasons for this, one is that it adds a realness to the shot, connecting the viewer to the image, but also it is because of necessity.
Sometimes i don’t have any ideas for how to style something on its own, so my motto is “if in doubt add hands”. I suppose it gets a little boring for the viewer to see the same type of shot over and over again so i try to find creative new ways of doing it.
Whether its a process shot with action, or interesting light, I look for ways to incorporate it in the space i have.
I am lucky enough to have a designated room for shooting in at home, my spare bedroom.
However it is so cluttered with the mass of props i have collected over the years that the actual shooting space is small. This means that i am limited to the types of shots i can create.
creating flatlays all the time became boring so trying to think outside the box and look for other angles is constantly on my mind.
I use pinterest for finding inspiration, not just for recipes but i also look at the angles pictures have been taken at and then try and see if i can put them into practise my self.
