how to age a mirror

i have been so excited about this mirror i found it in a charity shop for £25. i made my poor partner carry it all the way home, (bus ride and all) i have loads of mirror so i wanted to change this one up a bit. first i removed the back and painted it with a white chalk paint then i aged the glass, i was going to rub of loads of it but as i was doing it i decided to be a bit more sparing then the last one i did

i didn't get good photos of me rubbing the back of the mirror of so i used the photos from a previous post i did on ageing a mirror

first take the mirror out of its frame, and put it on newspaper or anything you want to stop making a mess.

then use nail varnish remover and a sponge and rub the back of the mirror this removes the paint, then if you use limescale remover or strong oven cleaner and leave on for a few minutes and rub it again with the sponge it will remove the silver mirror part off the glass, then you can use old newspaper or music sheet paper to back the mirror with, i used an image from graphic fairy. i used spray glue to stick it to the back of the mirror. this made the page look old.

check out a great tutorial for this over at songbird blog

  2. I love this idea! Esp. the part about adding vintage ephemera to the back so it peeks through. What a lovely effect! Thanks for posting, my dear! Your images & blog are simply gorgeous!

  3. I have been using another method that is very difficult to do. Thanks for the lime scale treatment - I will definitely try this!
